John begins his Gospel by directing our attention to the Word who was with God and became flesh. Before asking what faith requires of us, the passage asks us to consider who Jesus is.
Read with attention
Open John 1:1–18 in your Bible. Read the passage slowly, then read it again. Notice the words John repeats: Word, life, light, grace and truth. Consider how these ideas are connected in the passage rather than treating each phrase as a separate promise.
Grace begins with God drawing near
The movement of this passage is towards us. The Word becomes flesh and dwells among us. Christian faith begins with the character and action of God, rather than with our ability to have every answer.
If you are beginning again, you do not need to pretend that everything is clear. Bring the questions you actually have. Write down one phrase you want to understand and read the surrounding verses before deciding what it means for your life.
Carry one question into your day
What do you discover about Jesus here? Which part of the passage draws your attention, and why? Let that become the beginning of a prayer or a conversation.
